The star has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the UK's small concert spaces.

Fender was given the cheque on 16 October as his new release People Watching was declared the best record of the past year.

He has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages played in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the performances I did around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

He also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds helped spaces that were confronting potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that money from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his award prize money to worthy causes.

In the band received the award in the year 1996 for their record their work, lead singer Cocker stated that the group would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer she divided her award across multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," the artist told a publication.

Previously, they contributed their winnings to the local youth club that supported their group, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally 1994 winners M People donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"The victory was ample," stated vocalist Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had rescued several grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in the city and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
