This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
