White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse limits the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the end of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
